In January-September 2015 food products in Ukraine went up by 47% compared to the same period of the previous year, while personal income increased by only 17%. In this regard, Ukrainians are redistributing their consumer baskets and saving on food, buying only the most necessary and most affordable products. Consumption of confectionery is reduced alongside with other products; this caused reduction in its production.

Thus, the production of cakes fell the most: for 9 months of 2015 production amounts to 10.6 ths. tons, which is 31% less than during the same period last year. If in 2014 the production of cakes averaged 0.5 kg per person, by the end of 2015 this figure is to decrease by one third. Consumers indicate high prices to be the reason that caused this decline. Today a kilo of cake in stores costs already 100 UAH, and a classic Kyiv Cake - 200 UAH.

Production of other sweets also reduced: production of muffins constitutes 47.3 ths. tons (- 21%), of cookies and waffles - 180.7 ths. tons (-19%), of gingerbread - 26.5 ths. tons (- 26%), of chocolate bricks or bars up to 2 kg - 120.1 ths. tons (-27%). However, production of sweets of cheaper price segment increased: cocoa-free confectionery by 4% (139.5 ths. tons), and production of pies, patties and donuts doubled - to 16.9 ths. tons (+ 129%).

Thus, for 9 months of 2015 production of sweets per one Ukrainian constitutes 0.2 kg of cakes, 0.1 kg of biscuits, 1.1 kg of muffins, 0.4 kg of pies, patties and donuts, 4.2 kg of sweet cookies and waffles, 2.8 kg of chocolate in bricks or bars up to 2 kg and 3.3 kg of cocoa-free confectionery.
