Rye exports in February 2013 amounted to 740% compared to the same indicator in 2012. This was reported by the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club". Despite low profitability of rye production in Ukraine, the country is among top-4 world’s producers after the aggregate index of the EU-27, Russia and Belarus.

"If we talk about physical indicators, rye exports from Ukraine in February 2013 were 7.75 thousand tons, surpassing last years February indicator in seven times and in 2.5 times - exports in January 2013. At the same time, rye exports in 2011/12 MY were about 9.4 thousand tons ", –  UCAB advisor on agricultural markets Taras Vysotskyi says.

According to the results of 2012, the main buyers of Ukrainian rye were Polish, Israeli, Dutch, British, Latvian and Swiss companies. An interesting fact is that among all the above mentioned countries only Israel buys Ukrainian rye flour, though in small quantities. Thus, the main importer of rye flour, as well as many other processed products, is Russia. If we continue to consider the international market environment, Ukraine ranks fourth in production of rye in the world, after the aggregate index of the EU-27, Russia and Belarus.

"But against the background of such a positive picture, the average profitability of rye production in Ukraine in 2007-2011 was only 4%. Therefore, it is important for the rye production rye in Ukraine and benefits that this product brings to consumers’ health, to be underpinned with positive economic component,"- the expert says.

Information note: average area under rye in Ukraine is about 300 thousand ha. In 2012/13 MY domestic production reached 675 thousand tons.
