Romania. Wheat, maize exports remain high in March
Romania exported 220 thousand tonnes and 308 thousand tonnes of whet and maize respectively in March, rising the Q1 export data at record high. The grain exports reached 0.65mn tonnes of maize and nearly 0.5mn tonnes of wheat in Q1 after they exceeded 0.6mn tonnes for each grain in Q4 last year. The prices gave dramatically declined over the past year and when expressed in euros, country’s exports have not advanced at the pace of volumes. Nonetheless, exports of main three crops exceeded EUR 200mn in Q1 from EUR 115mn one year earlier. This was mostly due to the exports of maize, which surged 15 times in volume terms and more than six times in value terms. Interestingly, the import prices for wheat (EUR 240 per ton in Q1) remained pretty high and the volume of imports make us believe that the merchandise was not durum wheat or seed.
