Sales of grain and leguminous plants in Ukraine increased by 10,4%
For the first two months of 2014/15 MY (July-August), 8,3 million tons of grains and leguminous plants were sold by the Ukrainian agricultural enterprises, which is 10,4% more than the same period of last marketing year. This was stated in the monthly information bulletin of the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB) AgriFYI, with reference to the State Statistics Service data.
Increase in sales of grain crops on the whole was driven by higher sales rate, first of all, barley. In July-August 2014/15 MY, almost 2 million tons of the crop were sold, which is 45,2% more than the same period of last marketing year. It was also influenced by sales growth of corn by 23,8% (73,1 thousand tons) and of wheat by 1,2% (67,6 thousand tons).
The main prerequisite for growth in barley sales was increase in the gross harvest. According to preliminary data, in 2014/15 MY the total harvest of this crop increased by 2,1 million tons (28%) compared to the last marketing year due to increased productivity by almost a third on average in Ukraine (without accounting the AR of Crimea). The gross harvest of wheat also experienced an increase by 2,9 million tons (13,2%) owing to increase of crop productivity by 18,6%. In case of corn, sales growth was the result of last year's record harvest that reached 30,9 million tons. Also, this year the harvest started earlier, but it had not so significant effect on sales growth.
"Usually, under conditions of unstable national currency landowners try to restrain sales of grain, however, insufficient quantity of savings facilities and the working capital requirement to continue field work, especially in context of increased cost for production resources, forces many market operators to sell their goods according to demand conditions," – comments the expert of agricultural markets of the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB) Igor Ostapchuk.
