Fish supply on the Ukrainian market reduced by 34%

Fish supply on the Ukrainian market reduced by 34%

Annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea caused a significant decrease of fishing in Ukraine, and hryvnia devaluation led to a reduction in its imports. All of these factors have resulted in a reduction of fish supply in Ukraine by 34%. This was reported in the Association "Ukrainian Agribusiness Club" (UCAB).

According to the State Statistics Service, in Ukraine there was caught and extracted 41 thousand tons of fish and other water resources for seven months of 2014. For comparison, last year the comparable figure was 101 thousand tons. Significant reduction in results of fish economical activity in Ukraine was due to the temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, because 70-75% of the total fish catch in Ukraine has been provided by enterprises of this peninsula.

US dollars exchange rate growth led to a decrease in imports of fish by 25% as compared with the similar rates of the previous year. For seven months of 2014, 170 thousand tons of fish and seafood were imported to Ukraine. Most of these products were from such countries as Norway, Iceland, the UK and Estonia.

"Offer of the fish on the Ukrainian market decreased significantly, but there is still no deficit of this product. It is explained by a reduction in purchasing power of the population and cost optimization by households. Thus, in this situation, the role of inland waters and areas with access to the sea has increased substantially "- said Advisor on Agricultural Markets Alina Zharko .
