Profitable crops for Ukrainian steppes
Profitability analysis of grain and oil-bearing crops production for the years 2007-2011 shows that sunflower is the most profitable crop in Ukraine and in most regions of the Ukrainian steppe. But there are some exceptions. Thus, in the Crimea the average profitability of corn production for the analyzed period is 64%, while sunflower – just 35%: in the Kherson region the average index of soybean production amounts to 42%, while of sunflower - 31%.
"The fact that in the Crimea corn shows higher profitability than sunflower is not surprising, since it’s grown on irrigated areas and has really high marginality. A similar situation is observed with soybean in the Kherson region. So, despite the very difficult conditions for crop production in the Ukrainian steppe zone, the use of advanced technologies, including irrigation, allows to grow several crops successfully, minimizing production risks. Of course, the fastest way to exchange good practices between producers is participation in seminars, such as "Spring crops 2013 - where to invest", which will be held at the annual exhibition "Agroprom 2013" on February 20 in Dnipropetrovsk, where most farmers represent the steppe zone" - UCAB advisor on agricultural markets Taras Vysotskyi says.
During 2007-2011 Dnipropetrovsk region won the first place among the steppe regions in the profitability of sunflower production with an average profitability index of 64%. The second and third places went to Zaporizhzhya and Luhansk regions, where the average profitability index reaches 55%. Kherson region is a leader in efficient soybean production in the steppe zone - the aforementioned rate is 42%. If one does not take the Crimea into consideration, corn is the most profitable steppe crop in Mykolaiv region with the index of 35%. As for the less profitable spring crops in the steppe zone, they are: barley with the average profitability of about 10% in general, and negative 13% in Donetsk region.
