Crops overwinter well - Prysiazhniuk
Despite unusual weather in winter, the condition of winter crops is within normal limits. Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk has said about this, the press service of the Ministry informs.
"Abnormally warm temperature in December and early January has not adversely affected winter crops. Survey of winter crops shows that 7.2 million hectares are in good and satisfactory condition, i.e. 92% of winter crops. It is within the normal range and even slightly better against the last year," the Minister said.
According to him, without a snow cover, crops that are in good condition withstand temperatures down to minus 20 degrees. The Minister said that in order to increase the resistance of winter crops against natural disasters, the farmers used better seeds and put more fertilizers during the fall planting season. In general, almost all regions complied with the necessary technological operations.
"Farmers, scientists, agroindustrial regional centers are constantly monitoring winter crops. Respectively, in case of need, the structure of the spring sowing will be adjusted,” the Minister said.
Mykola Prysiazhniuk reminded that winter crops were sown on 7.8 million hectares. In general, the grain acreage under the next year's crop will be 16.4 million hectares.
