During the last two weeks, procurement prices of live pigs rose by 4.5%. The main underlying cause that influenced rise in prices was hryvnia devaluation. This was reported in the Association “Ukrainian Agribusiness Club” (UCAB).

As of September 3, procurement price of meat breeds pigs was UAH 27,00 per kg and of the second category pigs – UAH 25,50-26,00 per kg, while last week meat breeds pigs were bought at the price of UAH 25,00-26,50 per kg and the second category pigs– at the price of UAH 24,00-25,00 per kg. Pork producers explain this increase in procurement prices of pigs by US dollars exchange rate growth that lead to boosted costs of premixes and veterinary preparations.

It should be noted that pork supply at the Ukrainian market has declined slightly, since dramatical reduction of imports is not fully compensated by growth of domestic pork production. For seven months of 2014, pork imports totaled 20,5 thousand tons, which is four times less than at the similar period of 2013. So, the total pork supply at the Ukrainian market declined by 5.6% as compared to the last year's figures. However, due to the tense situation in the country, demand for meat also decreased slightly, so there is no pork deficit.

“Market operators and processing enterprises concerned by increase in prices of pork because at this rate majority of Ukrainians might not be able to afford meat. However, prices stop to trend upward in case of stabilization of the exchange rate”,- said advisor on Agricultural Markets of UCAB AlinaZharko.
