Modern pomiculture in search of new “niches”
UCAB experts claim that a new stage in pomiculture starts in Ukraine – the phase of search of new "niches". More investors calculate the possibility of establishment of walnut, apricot, cherry or peach orchards. That is the deficit of these crops that the market suffers for the last 5 years. The main factors that limit the growing of these crops is low temperature in winter, sudden temperature fluctuations, spring frosts during flowering, lack of heat, high summer temperatures and lack of rainfalls during the vegetation season.
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, during the last 11 years (from 2000 to 2011) in Ukraine there were established about 45.8 thousand hectares of new plantations of fruit crops. In the planting structure about 67% fell upon pomaceous fruits, 27% - upon the stone fruits and 6% - on nuts.
"As for the dynamics of establishment of new plantings of fruit crops, it should be noted that most of the new plantings in Ukraine is established with the usage of intensive technologies and prospective (commercial) species. – Ihor Strelyuk – UCAB Adviser on Horticultural Markets said. - Technologies and species in apple orchards are implemented most actively, but in this direction the market is already at the stage of saturation."
Recently in pomiculture the defined policy of intensification was applied - the changes took place in construction of plantations, planting density, species of plantings, maintenance of row width and nearwellbore areas, fertilizer and foliar feeding, technological methods of maintenance improve.
New vision of use of modern technologies in establishment of pomaceous, stone fruits, nut, organic orchard and vineyards establishment, preparation of project documentation for the establishment of orchards and vineyards, all the diversity of machinery for orchard establishment and other information will be available during the 2nd Module of UCAB AgriSchool “Pomiculture”, devoted to “Preparation and establishment of orchards”. The Module will be held on 1-4 November 2012 in the conference-hall of «Tavriya» hotel, 21 Bespalova Str., Simferopol, AR Crimea.
