Almost 90 countries import Ukrainian grain
In accordance with the FAO forecast presented by Kairat Nazhmedinov, senior economist for Regional Office in Europe and Central Asia, at first international conference GRAIN UKRAINE in Odessa, global production volume of grains and cereals will reach 2 543 M tons (+0.6% to 2015). Global wheat production most probably will not reach higher volumes comparing to 2015, whereas rice production and fodder grains volumes forecasted with growth.
Global cereals consumption in 2016/17MY projected to reach 2 546 M tons (+1% to 2016). Current forecast of ending stocks volumes estimates 642 M tons of cereals comparing to 2015 in accordance to expected descent of sorgo and barley consumption.
Food and nutrition safety remains a major commitment for future. Last decade has demonstrated 20% growth of cereals production, nevertheless 800 M people suffering from hunger and nutrition lack. “There is no doubt that Ukraine has strategic value for global food safety. Accounting 25% of agro industry in 2015/16 year grain market is a key one for Ukraine and still have high export potential. Corn, wheat and barley accounted for 95% of exporting Ukrainian grains. In overall, grains foreign trade of Ukraine valued at 6 B USD annually. Almost 90 countries import Ukrainian grains, thus in 2015/16 MY Ukraine has taken seventh place globally due to wheat production volumes and sixth due to export volumes, seventh due to corn production and forth due to export volume”, - said Kairat Nazhmedinov, senior economist for the FAO Regional office in Europe and Central Asia / FAO Investment center.
