Major retail chains in H1 2009

The independent consulting group GT Partners Ukraine has assigned top 50 foodstuff retailers of Ukraine by the number of outlets.

The discounter chain ATB-Market became the absolute leader among retail chains, It has opened 40 stores since the beginning of 2009. As of August 2009, the chain united 332 outlets. Multi format Fozzy Group ranked second with 292 stores. The group has mainly developed via opening new outlets Silpo in 2009. The chains Furshet (97 stores) and PAKKO-Holding (85) were far behind. Evrotek (totally 84 outlets), Ukrainian Retail (45), NS Limited (45) and Rainford (42) have considerably developed due to acquisition of smaller competitors.

According to GT Partners Ukraine, the main peculiarity of H1 2009 was that many chains reduced the number of outlets. It was typical for the following market insiders: Nash Kray, Bolshaya Lozhka, Vopak, Velyka Kyshenya, and Furshet. Some market players, like Kvartal, Arsen, Barvinok, Olivye, sold a part of their assets to competitors. 42% of chains have neither opened, nor closed their outlets in 2009, but have preferred to develop the existing ones. Most of these chains are regional companies like Natalka, Leleka, Mars, Barvinok. The number of chains that continued raising the number of outlets considerably fell. Only 18 chains out of top 50 opened more stores, than closed. Among them were the national companies ATB-Market, Fozzy Group, Evrotek, EKO (as of late H1 2009, it united 67 outlets), Ukrainian Retail, Rainford, NS Limited, SPAR-Ukraine (34), Metro Cash & Carry (25), Billa (16), BT Invest (10), Amstor (24), Tavria V (32), as well as regional players Virtus (Odessa), Obzhora (Donetsk), Lvovkholod, and Kolos (Chernovtsy).

As for geographical coverage, Fozzy Group was leading with stores in 23 regions of Ukraine. Furshet ranked second (20 regions), Kviza-Trade third (19). In general, there are 11 national food retail companies in Ukraine that are represented at least in four out of five economic-geographical regions of the country (West, North, Centre, East, and South).
